    Chris, one of the founders of Bruno Cafe in the Park, tells the story of how the cafe emerged during the pandemic. A serial entrepreneur, Chris began as a tenant at Griya Tapa (now gripastudio) and always imagined the park having a cafe where people could share a meal or drinks together. He even called it ‘Sunshine Park’ in his head.

    Initially, Bruno Cafe in the Park served as a place for gripastudio visitors to grab a bite to eat. However, it quickly became a spot where people came to work, hold gatherings, and let their kids visit the koi pond while enjoying fluffy pancakes. The harmony created around food, space, people, and their activities at gripastudio is remarkable.

    The concept

    Bruno Cafe in the Park is a cozy pet-friendly cafe that serves hand-tossed pizza and items meant for sharing, fostering a sense of community and enjoyment.

    We envisioned a picturesque setting where people could delight in eating pizza and pasta underneath the natural canopy of the rambutan tree, situated in the heart of the park. When it came to naming the cafe, we opted for an Italian word that is both memorable and easy to pronounce. Serendipitously, the landowner had a dog named ‘Bruno,’ which perfectly suited our vision and added a charming personal touch to the name.

    What inspired you to create a cafe in a hidden park?

    “The creation of Bruno Cafe in the Park is filled with coincidences and dreams. Every time I passed by on my way to the office upstairs, I always admired the private park inside Griya Tapa (now gripastudio). In my head, I called it ‘Sunshine Park’.

    I even created merchandise based on the concept. It was an imaginary park with a cafe and a sundries stall, where people could share a meal or drinks while enjoying ideal weather. Then, in 2020, when the pandemic hit and gripastudio was under renovation, my imagination became a reality.”

    We always prioritize ingredients to reduce our carbon footprint and grow our own when possible. Addressing environmental impact is challenging by modern hospitality standards, but we prefer the term _“as sustainable as possible”_ meaning we make every small effort to reduce our footprint.

    “I believe people’s experience is crucial nowadays; they seek to have a good time. If we can offer them an experience they can cherish—good food, excellent service, and memorable moments—they can then share their stories. It’s akin to creating art in some manner.”
