Down the Rabbit Hole: Can We Truly Cross Paths Again?

# The wake up call

At 48, I found myself at a significant crossroads in my career. A new senior management opportunity was presented to me, and I was faced with a decision: should I continue in my current CEO position, navigating the company through familiar waters and waiting for the day when retirement would naturally arrive, or should I take the leap, embracing a new challenge for the next decade? This new role meant I would end my career at 58, a nice, rounded age to step back from the workforce. After a lot of thought, I took the job. It was exciting, nerve-wracking, and yet, somehow, liberating—an opportunity to push my boundaries once more before the inevitable shift into retirement. 

Yet, ever since I accepted that role, the idea of retirement has lingered in my thoughts in a way it never had before. Retirement is one of those subjects that, for much of our lives, feels distant, even abstract. It’s a destination we all know we’ll reach, but for many years, it remains hidden somewhere over the horizon. When you’re in the midst of a thriving career, your mind is preoccupied with growth, success, and the day-to-day challenges of leading a business and a family. And, perhaps most importantly, was I truly prepared for the financial reality of retirement? 

As someone who had spent a significant portion of my professional life advising others on the importance of financial planning, it was humbling to realize just how uncertain I was about my own readiness. I started asking myself difficult questions: Would my savings be enough to support not just me but my spouse as well? Had I accounted for the unexpected, the rising cost of living, or the growing expenses related to health as we age? These questions were not easy to face, but they were essential. 

Looking back, I sometimes wonder why I hadn’t given these matters serious thought earlier in my life. Was I afraid to confront the reality that my career wouldn’t last forever? Or was I simply too caught up in the demands of the present, too focused on immediate goals and the needs of my family to look that far ahead? I suspect it was a combination of both. Like many professionals, I had a tunnel vision that centered on the "now." I was concerned with leading my company to new heights, ensuring my children had the best education, and building a future for my family. In doing so, I became so absorbed in the present that I didn’t adequately prepare for the next phase of my life.

Despite being a fund manager and continuously advocating for the importance of investing, I had assumed that my savings would automatically be enough when the time came. I thought that by the time I was ready to retire, I’d have more than sufficient funds to replace my income. Yet, the truth was more sobering. I realized that I, like many others, had neglected to carefully map out what my financial future would truly look like. I had fallen into the trap of assuming that the numbers would work out without really crunching them. Retirement planning, I came to understand, is not just about how much you save but about the longevity of those savings.

For some, a billion Rupiah might seem like a lot of money, but when you start calculating living expenses, healthcare costs, and the unknowns of the future, you realize that what seems like a large sum can quickly deplete. It wasn’t just about reaching a certain financial milestone; it was about ensuring that the money would last for as long as I would need it. This realization hit me hard. I had known about the concept of longevity risk for years, but it wasn’t until I started seriously contemplating my own retirement that it became clear I wasn’t immune to it. The risk of outliving my savings was real, and it was something I needed to address with a sense of urgency.

_Javanese Surakarta_. Learning this dance has been incredibly powerful, from proper etiquette, refined body rhythms to improving focus and concentration. The dances are also adorned with stunning costumes, inspired by wayang stories, Javanese history, and cultural customs.

In the past, we have won several dance competitions organized by the Jakarta Arts Council based on Javanese dance. We have participated in World Dance Day four times in Solo by performing _Tari Srimpi Ludiro Madu, Tari Srimpi Gondo Kusumo, Tari Golek Widyanjngtyas, Tari Sekar Rinonce, Tari Raden Ronggo, and Tari Bahasa Tubuh_. 

We also have collaborated several times with the renowned **Nan Jombang Dance Company** to produce contemporary dance based on Tari Minang, staged several dances with the **Tarakanita Dance Community**, **Jawa Jawi Java**, helped with cultural arts lessons at a school and carried out cultural missions to several countries.

## The concept

Bruno Cafe in the Park is a cozy pet-friendly cafe that serves hand-tossed pizza and items meant for sharing, fostering a sense of community and enjoyment. 

We envisioned a picturesque setting where people could delight in eating pizza and pasta underneath the natural canopy of the rambutan tree, situated in the heart of the park. When it came to naming the cafe, we opted for an Italian word that is both memorable and easy to pronounce. Serendipitously, the landowner had a dog named ‘Bruno,’ which perfectly suited our vision and added a charming personal touch to the name.

“The creation of Bruno Cafe in the Park is filled with coincidences and dreams.
Every time I passed by on my way to the office upstairs, I always admired the private park inside Griya Tapa (now gripastudio). In my head, I called it ‘Sunshine Park’.

I even created merchandise based on the concept. It was an imaginary park with a cafe and a sundries stall, where people could share a meal or drinks while enjoying ideal weather. Then, in 2020, when the pandemic hit and gripastudio was under renovation, my imagination became a reality.”

Essentially, it is a seamless blend partnership between two businesses that complement each other and share the same vision and mission. 

Chris, one of the founders of Bruno Cafe in the Park, tells the story of how the cafe emerged during the pandemic. A serial entrepreneur, Chris began as a tenant at Griya Tapa (now gripastudio) and always imagined the park having a cafe where people could share a meal or drinks together. He even called it ‘Sunshine Park’ in his head.

Initially, Bruno Cafe in the Park served as a place for gripastudio visitors to grab a bite to eat. However, it quickly became a spot where people came to work, hold gatherings, and let their kids visit the koi pond while enjoying fluffy pancakes. The harmony created around food, space, people, and their activities at gripastudio is remarkable.

We often hear the phrase, “The customer is king.” But those of us who’ve spent time on the frontlines of customer service know it’s not always that simple. Each customer brings their own set of needs, emotions, and expectations to the table, and sometimes, no matter how hard we try, we fall short of meeting those expectations.

For me, this realization came after a significant transition in my life. After years in senior management—where I was often on the receiving end of service—I took on a role as an admin. It was a profound shift, moving from being served to serving others. This past year has been a humbling and eye-opening journey, one that has transformed how I view customer service. What I once understood from an **inside-out perspective**, focused on processes and systems, has become an **outside-in experience**, where I now listen, empathize, and try to see the world through the eyes of those I serve.

But as rewarding as this has been, it’s not without its challenges. Customers come from all walks of life — **different ages, genders, cultures, and backgrounds**. Each interaction requires us to adapt, to understand, and to communicate in a way that resonates with their individual needs. There is no one-size-fits-all approach. Every person is unique, and that’s what makes serving them both beautiful and difficult.

And then there are the **complaints** — the inevitable frustrations that often have little to do with us as admins. Whether it’s system errors, unclear processes, a misunderstanding of the terms and conditions, or even issues with the product itself, we’re often caught in the middle, bearing the brunt of problems beyond our control. It’s easy in these moments to feel disheartened or defensive. After all, we’re only human.

But here’s where our role becomes essential. While the issues may not be ours to fix, we still hold the power to change the customer’s experience. Through patience, clear communication, and, most importantly, empathy, we can guide them through their frustrations and help them find resolution. In doing so, we transform from mere service providers into **problem solvers, advocates**, and, sometimes, even a source of comfort in their moment of need.

This experience has taught me that **respect and empathy** are the cornerstones of customer service, and beyond that, of human connection. Every customer interaction is a reflection of a deeper truth: that we are all in need of understanding and compassion, no matter which side of the counter we stand on. In these moments, we must remember that we too are customers in other aspects of life. We’ve all been on the receiving end of frustration, confusion, or disappointment. And it’s this shared experience that reminds us to approach every person with the care and respect they deserve.

What I’ve come to realize is that respect—for the customer’s needs and for our role as admins—keeps the show running. Even when the problems are out of our hands, the way we respond can make all the difference. It’s not just about solving problems; it’s about **building trust, fostering understanding**, and creating lasting relationships with the people we serve.

At the heart of it all, respect and empathy are the foundation of every interaction. No matter our roles — whether we are the ones serving or being served — we are all human beings. We all crave love, respect, and understanding. When we recognize the humanity in one another, we create an atmosphere where kindness and connection can flourish. It’s through this mutual respect that we can move beyond the daily challenges of customer service and find something much more meaningful: a true human connection.

On the far left stands the Tree of Life, a sturdy metallic sculpture whose roots burrow deep into unseen soil while its branches stretch outward in all directions. It is a universal symbol of creation and connection. From a single source, life spreads endlessly, branching into countless possibilities, much like us.

We are born with roots, tethered to a singular origin. Yet as we grow, we branch out, exploring the world, forging paths, and chasing dreams. These branches represent our choices, ambitions, and aspirations—a testament to human curiosity and purpose. But no matter how far we venture or how high we climb, the tree reminds us of one profound truth: we are all connected to the same Source.

Retirement is often seen as a period of newfound freedom—a time when the relentless demands of work finally fall away, leaving us with the gift of time. It’s a strange sensation, though. Time, which once seemed so scarce, now feels abundant. There are days when I find myself marveling at how much I can do, how many moments are now available to be filled with whatever I choose. Yet, in the same breath, I am reminded that time is finite. No matter how much it feels like I have now, I know it is limited and will not be here forever.

As I settle into this new rhythm, a gentle but persistent thought lingers in the back of my mind: How did I get here, and what have I learned from the journey so far? In some ways, it feels as though the last few decades passed in a blur. Life, with all its joys and challenges, moved swiftly, and now, in retirement, I find myself looking back—almost as if through a rearview mirror—at all that has changed. What strikes me the most is how much feels recent, as though some moments just happened yesterday. Yet, when I look closer, I see how much time has actually passed, and how different things are today.

I often wonder, did I miss some of those precious moments? Were there times in my life that I rushed through without appreciating them fully? I think of my late parents, family dinners shared, and fleeting conversations with loved ones. Of course, there’s no use regretting what’s already been. We can’t change the past, and I’ve made peace with the choices I’ve made along the way. But the thought lingers: if only I had managed my time better, or put more effort into being fully present, could things have turned out better? These questions, while reflective, are not about guilt—they are about learning from the past so that I can live more mindfully in the present.

As I reflect on my children’s journey into adulthood, I can’t help but wonder whether I have given them what they needed or expected from me as a parent. The world they grew up in was vastly different from the one I knew, and while I tried my best to provide a strong foundation, I often wonder if the values and lessons I passed down were framed in a way they could fully absorb or accommodate.

Did I use the right language? Did I offer the relevant examples? Or was I unknowingly applying outdated principles to a modern world that required new perspectives? As a parent, you always want to set the best example and be a source of guidance, but the shifting cultural and societal dynamics between generations can create a disconnect. I wonder if I was flexible enough to adapt my approach as they grew, or if I clung too tightly to what I thought was best, not realizing that their expectations might have been different from mine.

More importantly, have they absorbed the values I hoped they would? Did I manage to bridge the generational gap effectively, or did my well-intended lessons get lost in translation? Daily errands, which once felt like small burdens squeezed into the remnants of my day, have become almost meditative. I no longer rush through them but approach them with intention, finding productivity even in the simplest tasks. Planning ahead for family ventures has also been a rewarding experience—I now have the mental clarity and time to give these projects the attention they deserve, which I simply couldn’t before.

Some of the common symptoms can show up in subtle ways. Perhaps it’s a lingering nostalgia or an urge to look back on the “glory days.” Or it might come as an underlying restlessness, a sense of “What’s next?” or “What now?” Since retirement, I’ve noticed moments where I catch myself reflecting on the intensity of my former workdays, the endless meetings, the important decisions that used to fill each day with a tangible sense of purpose. In retirement, these have become more than just hobbies—they’re fulfilling activities that provide a sense of purpose and enjoyment each day.

**Prioritizing People Over Tasks.** Throughout my career, I learned that while tasks and goals come and go, relationships last. I aimed to build genuine connections both within my organization and beyond it. Having relationships that weren’t solely tied to my role means that in retirement, I still have a strong support network. These relationships have become a key part of my life after work, offering friendship, support, and continuity as I step into this new phase.

**Delegating and Empowering Others.** I spent my later years in leadership focusing on mentoring and building a strong team around me. I saw my role as helping others grow and succeed, allowing them to make decisions (and mistakes), rather than maintaining a tight grip on every project. This allowed me to step away more comfortably, knowing that I’d left the organization in capable hands. It also instilled in me a greater sense of trust and a willingness to let go, which has been invaluable in retirement.

### Coping with the Transition: Things That Help Me Stay Grounded

Since retirement, I’ve found that adjusting to this new phase requires both patience and adaptability. It’s an ongoing process, and I’ve been exploring several things to help myself stay grounded and purposeful.

**Rediscovering Old Hobbies and Exploring New Ones.** I now have the time and freedom to pursue activities I once put on hold. From traveling to spending more time on creative interests and nurturing new ventures, these activities give me a sense of joy and fulfillment that’s different from the professional satisfaction I used to feel.

Some of these are simple small wins, like doing housework, maintaining an exercise routine, while others are more ambitious, like learning a new skill. These goals keep me engaged and help me retain a sense of momentum.

**Paying forward.** Volunteering, offering advice, and sharing knowledge have provided new sense of purpose, allowing me to continue contributing meaningfully to others. It’s not about holding a position of authority but rather offering support and guidance where needed. This shift has allowed me to experience purpose through service, rather than leadership.

**Practicing Acceptance and Gratitude.**  I’m finding that practicing gratitude and acceptance helps me stay centered in the present. I focus on what I have now, rather than what I may have left behind. ### Moving Forward: Ready for Whatever May Come

Though I haven’t felt the full weight of retirement syndrome, I know it’s a potential part of this transition, and I’m ready to face it if and when it comes. Each day in retirement is a reminder that this phase is as much about discovery and growth as any other part of life. By staying connected, curious, and engaged, I’m finding new ways to feel fulfilled and purposeful, no matter what the future holds.

For me, retirement is a beginning, not an end. I’m grateful for the experiences I’ve had, and I’m open to what lies ahead. This journey isn’t about clinging to the past but about embracing each day with a spirit of humility and readiness for whatever may come. The time is now to redefine purpose and meaning, to enjoy the freedoms I’ve worked for, and to continue learning and growing - one day at a time.

In the lead-up to my retirement, several friends pulled me aside and mentioned something I’d heard of but never really thought would apply to me: “post-power syndrome.” They warned that stepping down from a leadership position can be like walking away from a part of yourself. We’ve seen colleagues, and mentors struggle with it—a deep sense of disorientation that sets in when the routines, responsibilities, and the identity of “being in power” suddenly fall away.

Navigating Retirement Syndrome: Preparing for Life Beyond Leadership

### 1. Evaluate and restructure your existing assets

Take a deep dive into your current assets and think strategically about how to maximize their potential. For many, property or real estate forms the bulk of their wealth—especially in Indonesia, where owning property is often seen as a primary investment. While real estate can be an excellent long-term asset, it’s not always liquid, meaning it can’t easily be converted into cash for everyday living expenses.

Now that you’re retired or nearing retirement, liquidity becomes essential. Maintaining a higher level of cash or liquid savings ensures you have the flexibility to meet daily needs without stress. Here’s how to approach this:

**Consider downsizing.** If your home is larger than you need or located in an area with high costs of living, consider downsizing. Moving to a smaller home or a more affordable location can free up equity while reducing ongoing expenses like maintenance and utilities. As part of this process, think about selling or liquidating old or unused items. This not only generates extra cash but also reduces the cost and effort of maintaining or storing those belongings, making your new, smaller space more manageable and efficient.

**Generate income from real estate.** If you have additional properties, explore options such as renting them out or selling them. This can create a steady income stream or a reserve of liquid cash to cover your living expenses.

**Rebalance financial portfolios.** Review your financial assets, such as stocks, bonds, or mutual funds. If your portfolio leans heavily toward high-risk investments, now may be the time to shift to more stable, income-generating options like dividend-paying stocks or bonds. This strategy can help preserve your capital while ensuring steady cash flow, even in fluctuating markets.

### 2. Practice conscious spending and prioritize essentials

Retirement is the perfect opportunity to re-evaluate your spending habits. Being financially mindful doesn’t mean cutting out all pleasures—it’s about striking a balance between enjoying the present and securing your future.

**Differentiate wants from needs.** Identify areas where you can cut back. For example, subscriptions, dining out, or costly hobbies may be non-essential expenses that can be scaled back without sacrificing your quality of life.

**Adopt conscious spending habits.** Before making major purchases, give yourself time to consider whether they’re necessary. This deliberate approach can prevent impulse spending and help you make thoughtful financial decisions.

**Create a flexible budget.**  Draft a budget that accounts for both fixed expenses (like housing, utilities, and insurance) and discretionary spending (like travel or hobbies). Review it regularly—monthly or quarterly—to ensure you’re staying on track and to identify any opportunities for adjustments.

This conscious approach allows you to cultivate a sustainable financial pathway while still enjoying the freedom retirement offers.

### 3. Explore supplemental income opportunities

If you’re comfortable with the idea, consider generating a small supplemental income. This doesn’t mean going back to a full-time job—there are flexible, fulfilling ways to earn while still enjoying retirement.

**Leverage your expertise.**  Consulting, part-time work, or freelance projects can provide income while keeping you mentally engaged.

**Turn hobbies into earnings.**  If you enjoy teaching, coaching, or creating, consider turning these hobbies into income streams. For instance, you could tutor, lead workshops, or sell handmade goods.

**Pursue a passion-driven venture.** Retirement can also be the perfect time to explore a small start-up or business that aligns with your passions. Whether it’s starting a boutique, launching an online store, or offering niche services in a field you love, this can combine personal fulfillment with financial benefits.

Earning even a modest amount can provide a cushion for unexpected expenses and restore a sense of purpose and connection to your work and community.

### 4. Prioritize healthcare and insurance

Healthcare is one of the most significant expenses in retirement, so ensuring adequate coverage is crucial. Medical emergencies can quickly deplete your savings, so proactive planning in this area is essential.

**Review health insurance.** Ensure you have sufficient health insurance coverage that can handle unexpected medical costs. If you’re unsure about your coverage, consult an insurance advisor to discuss your options.

**Stay healthy and proactive.** Prioritize regular health check-ups, exercise, and a balanced diet to minimize potential health risks. Investing in your well-being now can save significantly on future medical costs.

Retirement is a time to move forward, not to dwell on past decisions or achievements. If financial instability weighs heavily, it’s easy to feel tethered to past mistakes or an idealized version of who you were during your working years. But remember, retirement is an invitation to redefine your identity and priorities.

By focusing on what you can control—restructuring assets, managing expenses, and exploring new income opportunities—you can approach retirement with confidence and purpose.

Many people enter this phase underprepared—not out of laziness or denial, but because life’s urgent priorities like children’s education or home expenses took precedence. The “later” of retirement always felt distant, and often we assumed there’d be more time to save.

As months go by and bank balances shrink, a sense of financial vulnerability sets in. Anxiety grows with the realization that these funds are finite. We may not have enough to last the next few decades, a possibility that casts a shadow over our sense of well-being, undermining the newfound abundance of time and freedom that retirement promised.

### Facing the Guilt and Fear of Financial Shortfall

It’s one thing to retire and lose a title; it’s another to feel unprepared financially. This scenario brings a mix of guilt, frustration, and even embarrassment. In hindsight, we might wish we had prioritized savings, or that we’d considered retirement as part of life’s inevitable phases rather than a distant eventuality. **The thought of depleting our savings or outliving our assets brings forth fear and guilt.** We feel accountable for the choices we made in the past, questioning if we misjudged our own financial resilience.

This financial shortfall can erode self-esteem. Those of us who once held respected positions may feel the potential to become a burden on family members. We may begin to worry about being perceived as “unprepared” or “irresponsible,” especially if we’d previously been seen as capable and reliable. And this fear is not exclusive to former leaders or executives; it’s a relatable experience for anyone entering retirement unprepared for the long-term financial demands it brings.

Many articles on post-power syndrome address the emotional and psychological symptoms of no longer wielding influence or making decisions that impact others. They describe how stepping down leads to a void in purpose and direction. While these symptoms are real, I believe financial security, or the lack of it, can often be the hidden driver behind retirement syndrome for all retirees—regardless of their former power or prestige.
